The first snow of the season

Two nights ago, we had the first snow of the season. Not in the city of Graz but on the Schöckl, the tall mountain you can see from the city of Graz. The Schöckl is 15 km north of Graz and there is a cableway to the summit. Pen and Lia love snow, even more so since they recently discovered the Disney movie "Frozen", so a visit to the snow and ride on the cable car was the perfect choice for a free Wednesday afternoon.
The Schöckl is a popular spot for Graz-ers, it is not too far away from the centre of town and whether you take the cable car to the summit, walk up, run up (yes people really do that!) and take the cable car back down or hike, you're sure to have an awesome time in the fresh mountain air. The girls and I opted, for obvious reasons, to take the cable car up and down. And Jasper, our family dog, joined us, as dogs are always welcomed in Austria, even in most restaurants.

After playing in the snow, we went to find some warmth and to have a break from the icy cold wind, in Alpengashof Restaurant, where the girls had their favourite treat, a wiener schnitzel, chips and an apple juice.

What a awesome afternoon we had! As a South African, I'm always as excited as any kid at the chance to see snow and to play in it. I would have to drive for hours, to see the snow back in South Africa, and when it does snow the once or twice during the winter, the warm African sun melts it away in no time. Even after 7 years in Austria, I still get so excited by snow.
