I have been organising and sorting Pen and Lia's bedroom. Winter will be here before we know it. I wanted to create a play area in the girls room where they could play when the weather doesn't allow outside play and I thought a chalk board would be a fun thing to have in their room.

Thanks to the magic of Google, Pinterest and YouTube I found some inspiration and after a look at my local IKEA to see what materials I could source, I was able to make a good DIY magnetic chalk board.

You will need:

1. Either the Ikea Spontan metallic board

or the Ikea Rejig metallic board

Or any other metallic notice board you can source

2. Some coarse sand paper from your local DIY or arts and crafts store

3. Black chalk board paint and paint brush or spray paint. I used spray paint. One to one and a half cans per metallic board.

4. Start by sanding the metallic boards.

5. Then spray/paint the metallic boards. I did this outside, and I placed a plastic sheet over the grass so I did not leave any marks. As with any painting, thin layers are better than a thick layer. I did two thin coats, and allowed time for the paint to dry in between.

And there we go, a magnetic chalk board for your kiddies to draw on and to attach their artwork on with magnets.
